Overview

Healthy sexual development involves biological, psychological, and socio-cultural processes. Like all aspects of adolescent development, sexual development occurs both within an individual and through interaction with the environment. The course provides information about the different experiences of adolescents and advice on how to communicate with them.

The main learning objectives of the course are as follows:

  • To understand adolescent development
  • To know the social influences on adolescents from an internal and external perspective
  • To understand identity development
  • To be able to recognise emotional distress in adolescence
  • To know how adolescents want to be treated
  • To know how to communicate with adolescents
  • To understand sexuality and sexual orientation

This course meets the Training, Support, and Development Standards as outlined in The Fostering Services (England) Regulations 2011.
