We all begin a new foster placement with high hopes that a “forever” family has been created. Yet, a large number of fostering families find their dreams are shattered as they realise that despite everyone’s best efforts, the fostering placement isn’t going to work, and the placement breaks down.

A fostering breakdown is heartbreaking for all involved – the social workers who placed the child, the therapist who tried to resolve the issues with the family, the foster carers who thought they were up to the task of caring and supporting this young person, and most of all, for the young person who is once again embraced by rejection and loss.

In this course, learners can find out more about placement breakdowns and what we can do to support all those involved.

The learning objectives are as follows:

  • To explore the causes of placement breakdown
  • To recognise the underlying factors of placement breakdown
  • To look at the events and behaviours leading up to placement breakdown
  • To identify the actions they can take to minimise placement breakdown and its impact

This course meets the Training, Support, and Development Standards as outlined in The Fostering Services (England) Regulations 2011.
