Overview

This course aims to enable carers to identify girls at risk of female genital mutilation. Once a girl at risk has been identified, the course will cover what steps you can take to assist those at risk. The course material deals with issues posed by FGM at all stages of a girl or woman’s life.

The key areas of the course are as follows:

  • To understand the social and cultural aspects of FGM
  • To know the health consequences of FGM
  • To be aware of legislation relevant to FGM
  • To be able to recognise the indicators of FGM
  • To understand managing FGM disclosure and safeguarding
  • To know how to take appropriate action if you have concerns, including appropriately reporting concerns safely and seeking advice

This course meets the Training, Support, and Development Standards as outlined in The Fostering Services (England) Regulations 2011.
