This course is a comprehensive guide to understanding attachment and its impacts on child development. The course explains “Attachment Theory” and highlights academic theory from the 20th to the 21st century from academics across the globe. The course explores the impact of neglect and/or abuse on a child as they develop from birth up to young adulthood and shows how caregivers can negate the effects of this neglect and/or abuse with helpful techniques and skills. The role of the caregiver, the family, and the child’s surroundings are also brought to the forefront to show their impact and importance on a child’s development.

The learning objectives are as follows:

  • To understand the key principles of attachment and bonding critical for healthy development
  • To explore how experiences in earlier relationships create internal working models and attachment styles that systematically affect future relationships
  • To understand how healthy attachment is facilitated
  • To understand the impact of separation, loss, neglect, and abuse on children’s development and their capacity to form attachments
  • To explore the consequent challenging behaviours
  • To use an attachment perspective to enhance child-carer relationships
  • To understand the key developmental theories and milestones in childhood

This course meets the Training, Support, and Development Standards as outlined in The Fostering Services (England) Regulations 2011.
